Anna "Nancy" Catherine Hirtle
F, #976, (1798 - 1876)
Parents:
Child of Anna "Nancy" Catherine Hirtle and William Benjamin Newcombe
Eliza Ann Newcombe+ (1827 - 1911)
-
Note: There seems to be confusion over which William Newcomb married which Catherine Hirtle. There is a William North Newcombe who marries an Anna Catherine Hirtle on 20 Oct 1818. That Anna Catherine Hirtle is a d/o Jacob Hirtle and Johanna (Anna) Christina Nauss.
Here we want the William Newcombe who m(1) Catherine Glawson, then m(2) [supposedly in 1828] Anna Catherine Hirtle, who is probably the widow of a James Mason. I have not (yet) found this Hirtle / Mason = Newcomb marriage, not even the marriage bond which is said to exist.
We do know (St. Paul's Halifax Marriages) that there is a James MASON = Nancy HIRTLE marriage on 26 Nov 1816.
The Elsie Thoresen files have a William Henry Newcomb (1830-1915) as a s/o William North Newcomb; he m. Magdalene Drusilla Cook 1856 (acc. to Thoresen).
The 1828 marriage of Anna Catherine Hirtle (the widow Mason) is said by Thoresen to be to Wm Henry Newcomb. Hmmm.....
The NEWCOMB file of Walter Mission has this:18. WILLIAM BENJAMIN6 NEWCOMBE, (Oliver5, Benjamin4, Simon3, Andrew2-1), b. 26 Nov 1786 at Pleasant Harbour, d. 27 Mar 1866 at Taylor's Head, ae. 79; m.(1) 8 Jun 1811, Catherine GLAWSON (chapter 23, #10), St. Pauls, Halifax, b. 18 Feb 1792, bapt. 25 Feb 1792 at Lunenburg, d. 1 Sep 1824 by drowning at Pope's Harbour, ae. 32, with her daughter Mary Eve, daughter of Francis Cornelius and Anna Catherina Elizabeth (West) Glawson; m.(2) per bond dated 12 Dec 1828, Anna Catherine HIRTLE/HARTLING, b. 17 Jan 1798, d. 4 Apr 1786 [sic presumably 1886 (JGC)], ae. 88 at Pleasant Hbr., daughter of Peter and Ann Elizabeth (Grass) Hartling of Quoddy.
William was born 4 years after his parents removal to Pleasant Harbour from Cornwalllis and as an adult resided at Taylor's Head (Popes Hbr.) where the children were born and raised. He was a fisherman, the chief occupation of his descendants as well. He was enumerated in the 1827 census at Taylor's Head, a family of 5 males, 4 females and 1 male servant. In the census of 1838 he is listed at Taylor's Head, a fisherman heading a family of seven with 2 sons and 3 daughters (3 between 6 and 14, 2 over 14) and he was my g-g-grandfather [this is Walter Mission speaking]. His wife Catherine's (Glawson) obit of 1824 reads that she left a husband and three children which does not compute.?
JGC: As already mentioned: I don't see the 12 Dec 1828 marriage bond referred to, at least not on NSHVS - tried Newcomb, Mason and Hirtle (plus variations of course).
Relationship:
2nd cousin 3 times removed of John Greenwood Cordes
- Birth: Anna "Nancy" Catherine Hirtle was born on 17 January 1798.2
- Marriage: She married James Mason on 26 November 1816.1,3
- Marriage: Anna "Nancy" Catherine Hirtle married William Benjamin Newcombe, son of Oliver Newcombe, on 12 December 1828.4
- Death: Anna "Nancy" Catherine Hirtle died on 4 April 1876 in Pleasant Harbour, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada, at age 78.4
