    15. (John) Peter HIRTLEHARTLING (93) (94) was born in 1764 in Oakland, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. (95) He was baptized on 23 Sep 1764 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. He died in Ecum Secum, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He resided in Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.(96) He resided in Ecum Secum, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He resided in Spanish Ship Bay, Nova Scotia. Thoresen Family Group Record, 1/12/1964; transcribed by P.B. Hirtle, 11/27/97. Sources: Notebook of Canon V.E. Harris, PANS; Lester A. Hirtle; N.E.H.&G. Register, Oct. '71; Martin E. Burt, Buckhannon, W. Va.; Philip Hartling.

Extract from Philip Hartling's book: "Peter Hartling, who was baptized 23 Septemer, 1764, was the brother of Philip Hartling and son of Jacob and Anna Maria Hartling (Hirtle). He was born in Lunenburg county and on 17 January, 1796 he married Anna Barbara Bourgongny. they resided in the Mahone Bay area, probably at Oakland, before moving to the Eastern Shore. The exact year they left Lunenburg County is not known but most likely it was in the 1820's. According to Canon Harris' Notes on the "Hirtle" family, Peter Hartling moved first to Ecum Secum and later to the Liscomb area, probably to Spanish Ship bay. His son, Jacob Hartling, did not move to the Liscomb area but instead settled at Beaver Harbour."

    Vicky Ryan adds:

'Ecum Secum, (pop. 253), Like the majority of the districts along this shore, Ecum Secum is a fine game territory. The name is derived from an Indian word meaning "red bank." Annually, visiting anglers take many salmon from the pools of Ecum Secum River."

He was married to Anna Barbara BURGOYNE on 17 Jan 1796 in Zion Lutheran Church, Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.(11) Facini gives the name as Catherine Barbara Bourgoyne, and a marriage date of 17 January 1796. In Shankle's Online Index, the spouse is listed as Anna Barbara, and the marriage date is 14 January 1796. Thoresen, too, has Anna Barbara, and so the name is used here.

"Johann Peter of Jacob Hirtle (4), son, Eichwald, and Miss Anna Barbara Bourgongny of John David Bourgongny in Eichwald (1) Dau. Married 17 Jan. 1796." Lutheran Church Records, Lunenburg, N.S., p. 236. Anna Barbara BURGOYNE(97) was born on 19 Oct 1779. She was also known as Burgoyne/Bougongay/Burgoine. Facini gives the name as Catherine Barbara Bourgoyne, and a marriage date of 17 January 1796. In Shankle's Online Index, the spouse is listed as Anna Barbara, and the marriage date is 14 January 1796. Thoresen, too, has Anna Barbara, with a marriage date of 17 Jan., so that date and name will be used here. (John) Peter HIRTLEHARTLING and Anna Barbara BURGOYNE had the following children:
