- Winthrop Bell, in The "Foreign Protestants" and the Settlement of Nova Scotia, p. 304, writes (in a footnote about the European origins of the emigrants): "I am including Strassburg and the other parts of Alscace [in "Southwestern Germany"]. By 1750 these had, it is true, been under French rule for over half a century. But as they had historically been part of Germany; as with one exception the names of the emigrants from there were all thoroughly German; and as their emigration was not improbably motivated in part by a desire to escape from some of the consequences of French rule, the inclusion would seem permissible as well as convenient."

The passenger list of the Gale (1751) shows Jacob Horn as age 23, from [Hessen]-Darmstadt.1,2 -
Another comment from Winthrop Bell, this time in The Register of Foreign Protestants of Nova Scotia, writes (in a footonte on the page for Jacob Horn): ("A letter from Leonard F. Tibbetts (18 Bradley Road, Arlington, Mass.), 9 July 1963, with some enquiries about ancestors among Nova Scotia's "Foreign Protestants" of the 1750's, mentioned Jacob Horn, a "German who came to Eastern Passage, Halifax, after fighting under General Wolfe at Quebec in 1759," understood to have been a member of Gorham's Rangers there. Mr. Tibbetts felt confident (apparently on the basis of more information than his letter mentioned) that this Jacob Horn was grandfather, through a son George (?), of Catherine Elizabeth Horn, who married Philip Faulkingham (Falkenheim) in 1816 (?), & with him moved to Jonesport, Maine. Mr. Tibbetts wrote that Jacob Horn died in 1821 at the age of 101. Despite the discrepancy in age (if Horn was 101 in 1821 he would have been 30 or 31, instead of 23, in 1751) identification with the Jacob Horn of Gale 1751 seems likely. He was a "German", so if in the Rangers [would] have arrived in Nova Scotia in the early 1750's. People are apt to exaggerate the [actual] ages of the very old, I think; & one cannot put absolute confidence in the ages given in ships lists.")3
