Thomas Smith

M, #3523, (c 1798 - 1885)

Children of Thomas Smith and Mary Elizabeth Smith

The birthplace of Thomas is not firmly established. The 1871 Census in Marie Joseph, Guysborough County (Household 81) has him born in Nova Scotia, but the 1881 Census in the same place (with son Charles and family, Household 94) states that he was born in England. I have chosen for now to regard the 1881 Census statement as being more reliable, on the grounds that the 1871 Census just used ditto marks to indicate birth in NS but the entry "England" in the 1881 Census required explicit intervention by the enumerator. There have also been suggestions that he was of German ethnic origins, though I have not seen a good source for this claim. If he was in fact of German origins there is a possibility that he should be identified with the Thomas Smith (or Schmidt)* born 1794 in Lunenburg County. Without a decent source I attach very little weight to this idea, at least for the present.
